As per the United Kingdom (UK) government’s ‘air quality plan’, it has announced to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars in Britain by 2040.

UK environment secretary Michael Gove mentioned that all cars must go fully electric within a century’s quarter. His aim is to have cars with zero emissions by 2040. The 2011 government’s carbon plan also envisaged the same so as to accomplish the mission of no petrol and diesel cars by the year 2050. This announcement will boost the sales of electric cars which now accounts only 1 percent of car sales in the UK.

The above is one amongst the many measures the government has planned so as to bring the pollution back to legal limits. Other measures include changing road layouts and the addition of components to buses that will help prevent carbon emissions to a large extent. If at all there is no change in pollution levels, the government would have to take more stringent measures and ban poor quality cars for some time of the day. The ‘air quality plan’ also includes incentive provision on green taxis and promotion and implementation of better walking and cycling provisions.

Making such changes have become inevitable in today’s alarming situation of air pollution.
