There is no doubt that photography is one of the most remarkable inventions of mankind. French inventor Nicephore Niepse was credited with the invention of photography in 1824. Later Louis Daguerre invented the daguerreotype process of photography which became famous and he came to be known as the father of photography.
Around the world, millions of photography lovers celebrate 19th August as World Photography Day. The Day was founded by Australian photographer Korske Ara in 2009 and 19th was the chosen date as it was the date that the patent of the daguerreotype was purchased by the French government. On this day, people share the photos taken by them and in a way, they are sharing their ideas and their world with the world.
The theme of World Photography Day 2017 was ‘Understanding Clouds’ while in 2018 the theme was ‘Be Nice’. This year, the aim of World Photography Day is to inspire positive change across the world.
World Photography Day is celebrated to connect people and raise awareness through the use of photography. Seminars and workshops are held on this day and views and ideas about photography are shared. Participants get an opportunity to share their photographs and raise awareness of the issues that are important to them and their communities.
World photography day which began with just 250 people signing up to participate has now swelled to a global audience of 500 million. Fans participate in numerous ways- from sharing their best photographs on social media to entering competitions and purchasing books related to photography.
This day is not only celebrated by professional photographers, but it inspires many photographers from around the world to share a single picture with their single purpose, yet motivating multiple minds to think different.
In a world where billions of photos are uploaded every hour, World Photography Day will no doubt be celebrated with lots of enthusiasm and zeal.
