Sanjith Konda House dreamt of a cushy corporate job while studying Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) at a leading Australian University. However, midway the 22-year-old dropped out and decided to become a tea-seller (Chaiwala) in Melbourne.
So, on a busy Sunday morning, one can now find Indians, native Australians, and a few Hispanics sipping steaming cups of tea in Melbourne's busy CBD (Central Business District). The little tea shop has grown to be a favorite gathering spot for Indian ex-pats.
Nellore-born Sanjith came up with this idea when his mother visited him and longed to drink Indian tea in Australia. Asrar, an NRI agreed to become an angel investor. In just over a year, his startup "Dropout Chaiwala," has grown to be a company worth a million (Australian) dollars.
Sanjith continues to import tea from India as he wishes to give the locals a taste of authentic Indian tea. The 'Bombay Cutting' is a big hit among the Indian community while the Australians love Indian 'masala chai' and 'pakodas'.
Sanjith claims that he hires Indian students so that such part-time jobs can supplement their income while living in a foreign country. When hiring new employees, Dropout Chaiwala prioritizes hard work and passion over academic credentials, states Sanjith who aspires to open a location of his tea shop in each Australian city.
Sanjith now intends to complete his degree in social work, an area he is passionate about.
