Marriage is usually a once in a lifetime experience and people definitely want to make it grand. With people sharing wedding pictures on social media, the celebrations have become very lavish and big-budget in present times.
One family decided to deviate from the norm and in the process, they set an excellent example of an eco-friendly wedding. Being aware of the enormous waste generated after a wedding, Selvamathi Venkatesh, deputy collector of Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu decided to go green for her son’s wedding
Venkatesh would feel bad to see the fancy and expensive cards dumped in the bin after they have served the purpose. She therefore, came up with this idea of printing invitations on a handkerchief. It was designed in such a way that the print would disappear after two to three washes so that the handkerchief could be of good use. She tried to do away with plastic by keeping glass tumblers. Cotton towels were provided to the guests instead of paper napkins.
Venkatesh’s unique return gift was sure to please the guests. It comprised of a cloth bag that contained two seed balls and a cotton towel. Around 2000 seed balls were made for the guests which included those of vegetables, neem trees and teak trees. She even arranged for the method of planting the seeds to be printed on the cover so that people will use them purposefully.
Selvamathi Venkatesh has set an excellent example of a marriage celebration that is very much in harmony with nature and easy on the pocket as well.
