"Dream, Dream, Dream! Conduct these dreams into thoughts, and then transform them into action."

There seems to be no chance of reformation for any person who has been locked up in a 2-by-2 cell all day. He may come out more frustrated and there is every possibility of his returning to crime. Therefore the prison director of Punta de Rieles prison in Uruguay, Luis Parodi came out with a plan to allow prison inmates to start their own business that will transform them into productive, satisfied and happy individuals.
Parodi’s project started in 2012 and it has been instrumental in changing the lives of inmates, many of whom return voluntarily to run their business.
The nature of business ranges from bakeries and barbershops to candy stores and carpenter shops. One inmate started out making blocks from an old mould and a secondhand shovel. He recently hired his tenth employee( who are also prison inmates) and is all set to expand his business with the help of loans. He owns an electronic tablet that helps him to take orders and communicate with customers outside the walls. It’s heartening to know that one inmate always buys a beautiful flower from the prison nursery to give to his mother when she visits. At times, one can see a convict baker with a birthday cake walking towards the prison gate to hand it off to a customer.
The prisoners themselves run a bank which funds their business. Part of their profits goes into it. A part of it goes to the government for use of the facilities and 10% goes to an association of victims of crime. The rest of the profit earned is deposited in the inmates’ accounts which they can access only after their release.
The prisoners are also offered opportunities to study or learn a new craft so that they are equipped with skills for a better life and are less likely to return to crime after their release.
