We have heard of sports tournaments but, little did we know of a trash collecting tournament until Brandon McKoy came up with one. It was held at Royal Jamaica Yacht Club located in Kingston where Jamaican fishermen gave their best to make it a success. Team Mama Mia nailed it by collecting 1,988 pounds of garbage from the surface of the sea.
In total, 11, 336 pounds of trash was collected during the tournament. Caribbean Maritime Institute acquired the second position by picking up 1,354lb of the trash while team integrity won a third place by collecting 1,141lb.
In a conversation with The Gleaner, Brandon spoke about how the contamination can be prevented as he said: “This is definitely not the solution to the crisis we’re facing. This is just about the awareness because the truth is that with the next heavy rainfall, we’re gonna be back to square one, so the solution cannot possibly be that we have to have a tournament every weekend to clean the garbage and keep it clean. The solution lies in the method of preventing it completely from getting into the sea in the first place.”
We wish more such tournaments are organized in every country to make people aware.
