Bilasini who hails from Dashipur village in Odisha risked being called a ragpicker as she collected plastic carry bags, polythene packets and other plastic items from garbage to skillfully convert them into colourful durable items like pen stands, baskets, flowers and animals among many other things.
Bilasini was aware that plastic is hazardous to the environment and therefore, decided to put it to proper use. She would collect plastic waste from garbage dumps and recycle them appropriately.
Bilasini learned this craft a few years ago and ever since she has been making beautiful baskets, pen stands, cell phone stands and other items. Her art has inspired many young women in her village who desire to work with her. Bilasini is able to make three baskets in six hours. However, due to the lack of proper marketing facilities, her business is not very profitable. She earns Rs 100 per basket by sale to middlemen who then sell for double the rate in the market.
There is good news for Bilasini as the District Manager of the Odisha Livelihood Mission, Dr. Puspashree Nayak has informed that a self-help group will soon be started in Dashipur to promote Bilasini’s craft. Bilasini is a mother of two sons who are working as plumbers in Mumbai. Her husband lends a hand in her work.
Bilasini’s concern for the environment led her to master a talent that helped her earn. With the self-help group coming up, more women will certainly benefit from her skills and talent.
