Although people are nowadays aware of the need to adopt green and sustainable measures in day to day living, very few act upon it.
Gautami Enclave in Kondapur, Hyderabad had made persistent efforts to implement rainwater harvesting, make compost pits and plant over 5000 saplings for the past eight years and their hard work has paid off now.
The Enclave comprises of various apartment buildings and its president Sridhar Yalamanchili started off with carrying out the rainwater harvesting model in two buildings. The initiative helped to save more than a thousand litres of water and reduced the building’s dependency on tankers. Encouraged by its success, other buildings also adopted this model. Greywater of the apartment buildings was also taken care of by digging charcoal pits with stones that filtered out the soap, foam and other contaminants.
People are also made accountable for their water usage by installing water meters that induce people to use water in a responsible way as they are paying for it through their pockets. Every drop is accounted for so that water is not mindlessly wasted by residents, housekeepers and gardeners.
Planting trees is a major oxygen pumping routine in the Gautami Enclave. Last year, the colony met their target of planting 5000 saplings in the area.
E-waste bins and waste segregation was also one of their important motives which they have successfully accomplished.
As a result of the above green measures, this residential society looks like the beautiful images in billboards of upcoming residential complexes – and this one is for real.
