The city of Vancouver, Canada, has placed restrictions on aquariums by banning the use of Whales and Dolphins for the purpose of recreation.
The decision comes after a unanimous vote in this regard by Vancouver Park Board. Accordingly, Beluga whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans have been banned to be kept in captivity for recreation or even for research. The decision was taken as Vancouver Aquarium had planned a beluga exhibit, which was to come up by 2029 at the cost of millions of dollars while being under investigation for whale treatment at the aquarium.
Vancouver Park Board assured its support for ethical cetacean treatment following loss of two beluga whales at the aquarium few months ago.Public opinion for and against the ban was also taken into consideration. The ban was given a green signal, as there was no proof with regards to adequate caring for the sea mammals.
Green commissioner Stuart Mackinnon said “We have a group of commissioners here who are caring, compassionate, smart, and do their homework.”
The Vancouver park board has seven elected representatives who came out with a unanimous vote and showed that they cared for the animals.
This could be an example wherein local bodies around the world, including India, can take call on wellbeing of not only sea mammals, but also other animals kept in captivity for recreational purposes.
