A one of a kind urban farm is being constructed in Paris with groundbreaking techniques which will redefine the concept of urban farms in the future. It is under construction in the south-west of Paris spanning an area of 14,000 sq meters (150695 sq feet).
There is a plan to grow more than 30 different plant species on this oasis in the heart of the city. The farm is expected to produce around 1,000kg of fruit and vegetables every day in high season. Twenty gardeners will tend to it and they will be using only organic methods.
The urban-farming company, Agripolis is at the center of this project. Its founder Pascal Hardy said that the fresh produce will be sold to the inhabitants across the city through veg-box schemes or via shops, hotels and canteens thereby helping to reduce food miles. He also informed that pesticides or chemicals will not be used and the farm will be a haven for biodiversity.
This new flagship farm in Paris will be pioneering their own technique in aeroponic ‘vertical’ farming. No soil (hydroponic farming) will be used which helps to minimize the risk of any pollutants. This method uses a closed water system.
An interesting aspect of the farm is that there will be an opportunity for local residents to lease small vegetable plots of their own. This will help city dwellers to connect to their food source.
