Ant Forest was launched on the Chinese third-party mobile and online payment platform in 2016. It has a carbon account where users can opt for activities such as booking tickets online, travelling via public transport, doing hospital registrations online and so on. The more they do such things, the more green energy points they get.
When a user collects enough points, he/she can plant a virtual tree which gets transformed into a real one and is planted in China. A report by the UN Environment stated that an area as big as 130,000 soccer pitches looks green now as a lot of trees have been planted there. The report also highlighted that already 500 million users have planted 100 million real trees via the app.
