While tea is the most consumed beverage in the world, 78 percent people consume black tea while only 20 percent people drink green tea. Usually, tea is brewed from the dried leaves of the Camellia sinensis bush. The level of oxidation of the leaves determines the type of tea.
Green tea is one of the less processed types of tea and is made from unoxidized leaves. It is therefore rich in most antioxidants and beneficial polyphenols. Following are some of the health benefits of green tea.
Boosts immunity:
Various factors lead to the generation of free radicals and oxidants in our body which can hasten aging and cause chronic and degenerative illness. Green tea which is rich in antioxidants known as polyphenols, particularly catechins helps to fight free radicals thus reducing the damage and preventing illness.
Prevents heart disease:
Studies have revealed that green tea consumption significantly reduces blood pressure levels- both systolic and diastolic. The brew also keeps in check low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol which is responsible for clogging arteries.
Fights cancer:
The flavenoids and catechins in green tea possess anti-cancer and anti-tumorigenic qualities. Regular intake of green tea can protect against oral, lung, breast, digestive tract, bladder and prostate cancers. Another study has proved that epigallocatechin-3-galate (EGCG) could enhance the efficacy of some cancer drugs.
Improves memory:
The above-mentioned compound EGCG and L-theanine present in green tea support the production of new brain cells. EGCG enhances the ability to learn and retain information. Polyphenols in green tea protect one against neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
Checks diabetes:
In India, there is a growing incidence of diabetes and let me share with you that green tea helps to regulate blood sugar. Polyphenols in green tea make the cells that metabolize glucose more reactive to insulin. A study by Harvard School of Public Health has stated that long-term green tea drinkers had a fewer chance of becoming diabetic then people who drank it less.
Strengthens Teeth:
The antioxidants in green tea prevent the growth of foul bacteria that cause periodontal disease. It thus helps to keep your pearly whites clean and healthy.
So, go ahead and reach out for your cup of green tea for its life-enhancing qualities.
