The world’s longest suspension bridge, the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge was inaugurated on Sunday in Switzerland. The bridge which spans a distance of 1,621 feet is the longest bridge in the world, according to Zermatt Tourism.  

The bridge has been constructed in place of an older bridge which was closed in 2010 as it was damaged by falling rocks.

Hikers using the bridge will be thrilled to get extraordinary and beautiful views of the Matterhorn, Weisshorn and Bernese Alps. The bridge covers a valley between the Swiss towns of Zermatt and Grächen which otherwise would have taken three to four hours to trek across the valley  — cutting the distance to just 10 minutes.

People with a fear of heights or who easily experience vertigo are advised not to use the bridge. The bridge is around 300 feet high and has to be crossed over the grating, which means tourists can see the height of the precipice below their feet.

The steel facility is very narrow, only 25 inches wide and its grated surface means it is possible to look down into the Grabengufer ravine below.

 Zermatt Tourism said in a news release -. “The thrill of traversing the precipice is indescribable.”
