A new breed of onions has been developed in America which, while peeling will not trigger any tears. Scientists and farmers all over the world have been trying to develop tear-free onions for decades and it took more than 30 years for crop scientists to finally produce the "sunion" described as crunchy and full of sweetness and unlike traditional varieties won't bring tears to the eyes.
These onions are smaller than normal onions but if kept in a cool dark place, they can stay fresh for up to six months. The sunions are not genetically modified but are developed through natural cross-breeding. They have gone on sale in the United States and there are plans to make it available in the United Kingdom.
