Denmark’s biggest energy company, Ørsted has finally started the operations on Hornsea One. And once all the work is done it will be able to provide renewable electricity to one million houses in the United Kingdom.
Until the year 2018, UK’s 659 MW Walney Extension was known as the largest offshore wind farm in the world but, by 2020, Hornsea wind farm will break the record and exceed 1 GW in capacity.
The incredible project is situated 120km off the world-famous stretch of coastline called the Yorkshire Coast. While talking about it, the first operational team shift leader, David Coussens who is also Hornsea One’s Deputy Operations Manager said: “Operating a wind farm this far offshore is unprecedented. We’ve had to think creatively and come up with new ways of working to overcome the logistical and technical challenges of operating a massive power station 120km from the shore, about the same distance as Grimsby to Leeds.” As written in a report by Ørsted.
Right now, 50 Siemens Gamesa 7MW turbines are operational and the rest of the installation might be continued till next year summer.
Innovation and progression are today taking the world much ahead and we are glad that project like these gets initiated.
