5 Dec 2017
December 5 is the day when the whole world celebrates International Soil Day. Though not as popular as the Friendship day or Valentine’s day, this day is taken seriously by those who care for mother earth, its sustainability and survival of plants and ultimately humans. I am sure that most of us would join…it is just a matter of awareness!
The International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) made a proposal in 2002 recommending the 5th of December as World Soil Day to signify the value of soil as a crucial element of the natural system and major aid to human development and survival. In December 2013 UN General Assembly accepted December 5th as the World Soil Day.
The day celebrated is to spread awareness about the significance of soils for food security, agriculture, as well as sustainable development. Let us see the importance of soil in our life.
The soil is a mixture of minerals, gases, liquids, organisms and other organic components. It is a natural body in which plant grows. A soil store water for plants and caters all needs of the plants. It is rightly called as ‘Skin of the earth’.
The soil of different texture, density, colour, porosity is found in the word. The nutritional value or quality of soil directly affects the plant or food that we grow in it. About 95% of the food we eat is directly or indirectly produced in the soil.
Soil which is high in organic carbon content helps in better rainfall infiltration & retention which helps against drought-like situations. It is one of the most critical and complex materials available on our earth.
Being such a crucial entity of our existence we need to understand its importance sincerely and protect it from any further pollution. We can take following measures to protect our soil and increase and maintain its quality.
We can increase the organic components of soil by increasing ground cover & vegetation and by applying composts. We can start using biologically based fertilizers. The soil cover is being reduced due to urbanization. One can ensure that as much soil be left untouched as possible. Building gardens instead of pavement is a better option.
Whatever steps we take, the thing to remember is, even the smallest efforts by us can make a difference to Mother Nature! The soil is the basis of all life forms on this earth, so it is imperative that we show our respect...or else...as per the Saint Kabir’s Doha;
माटी कहे कुम्हार से तू क्या रौंदे मोय|
एक दिन ऐसा आएगा मैं रौंदूंगी तोय ||
