Rakshabandhan is a festival that all brothers and sisters look forward to as it is the celebration of the bond of love between siblings. This year, it will be celebrated on August 7 and the elderly women from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh have reportedly sent a huge Rakhi to the Indian Army as a tribute to the brave soldiers.
A few days ago, the women of Kaithal district in Haryana sent a total of 950 rakhis to the soldiers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also receives rakhis every year. This year, women at an old age home in Varanasi have prepared rakhis for PM Modi. In addition to that, Muslim women from Varanasi while protesting against ‘Made in China’ products, have sent self-prepared rakhis to the Prime Minister.
State governments are also doing their bit ahead of the festival. To mark the occasion, the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday made an announcement that women will be allowed to travel free in government buses on ‘Raksha Bandhan’. According to an official, the free ride will be available from the midnight of August 6 to midnight of August 7.
Last year, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani traveled all the way to the Siachen Base Camp Glacier, the highest battleground in the world, to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with Army Jawans deployed there. She said it was a great honour for her to celebrate the festival with her brothers who guard the borders.
