In a conservative country like Saudi Arabia, women are being encouraged to take up employment. The labour ministry said that “Telework” and work from home will generate up to 141,000 jobs by 2020, providing “decent and proper” employment particularly for women and the disabled.
The term “telework” means work which can be done outside of a company's office. It is a good sign that Saudi Arabia is trying to get more women working as part of a wide ranging social and economic reform drive to cope with lower oil revenues.
The ministry said that there are a lot of social obstacles including transportation and family responsibilities that discourage women from going out to work. Women are not allowed to drive and public transport is limited. The ministry said telework enables a woman to work from home and therefore many women would be interested in taking up such jobs. It would benefit those in remote parts of the kingdom where employment is even harder to find.
Saudi Arabia wants to boost the proportion of women in the workforce from last year’s 23 per cent to 28 per cent. An official data revealed that at the end of 2015, there were 469,000 women employed in the Saudi public sector while another 500,000 worked in the private sector.
