Two research papers published show a probable chance of limitless blood generation from stem cells. Scientists are heading close to the successful execution of blood generation from the patient’s own stem cells.
The experiments are still under process and if gets successful it will be a great revolution in medical science as it will solve the problems of blood transfusions required during surgeries and the bone marrow transplants.
Stem cells in our bodies are responsible for the generation of new cells in our body. There are two stem cells. The adult stem cells look after the wear and tear of the cells and generation of new ones. Embryonic cells are present in the embryo. The scientists used both the cells. It firstly converted adult cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS). Then iPS and embryonic cells were converted to specialized ones called hemogenic endothelium by exposing them to chemical signals. The specialized cells are the ones that will lead to blood cell generation on being gene coded. The cells are forced to the blood-forming state upon changing the transcription factors that code proteins. There was an another approach in which only the adult stem cells were used.
Mice tests were carried out and still, the study is in trial and error stage but now close enough to make a novel declaration.
