With the aim of protecting the environment from the harmful effects of plastic, Swachh Bharat Recycle Machine will be installed in 10 of the suburban stations in the city which will enable commuters to recycle their plastic bottles and earn a reward for a job well done.
The first such machine was set up at the Churchgate railway station last year and has been used by tens of thousands who traverse the station on a daily basis. Some other stations where this facility is planned to come up are Borivali, Bandra, Dadar and Goregaon.
The machines are the size of a big refrigerator. The empty plastic bottle that has to be disposed is fed into the machine which is then processed and crushed. Later, they are recovered and recycled. Once the bottle is slotted, the user also gets a reward in the form of discount coupons from Sahakari Bhandar and Reliance Fresh Stores. They can also opt for Paytm credit points or choose to donate the equivalent money.
Wockhardt Foundation, an NGO that works primarily to empower the underprivileged has provided these machines which helps to curtail the problem of untreated waste in India. The trustee and CEO of the foundation said that through the Swachh Bharat Recycle machine, they aim to become a global green citizen, committed to recycle every PET bottle that is thrown into the waste and goes untreated.
The plastic from the machines are treated and sent to fiber manufacturing companies where they will be used in the manufacture of clothes or grocery bags or similar items.
