October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of early detection and preventive care to combat one of the most prevalent cancers affecting women. This year, HCG Manavata Cancer Center (HCGMCC), Nashik's leading cancer specialty hospital hosted its flagship "Pink Mela" event on October 26, 2024.

A committed group of medical professionals will be on hand to do physical examinations and examine medical histories, especially those pertaining to breast cancer or other pertinent illnesses. Additionally, the hospital is providing mammography exams at a discounted rate of Rs. 550 instead of the usual monthly charge of Rs. 7150.
Breast cancer is a disease that begins in the cells of the breast, where they grow and multiply uncontrollably, forming a mass or lump. While breast cancer primarily affects women, men can also develop it. Recently, Dr. Nagarkar achieved a milestone in breast cancer surgery by performing the world’s first robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy (RNSM).

Breast cancer represents nearly 30 percent of all cancer cases among women in India, making it the most prevalent cancer affecting women across the country. The risk of breast cancer increases significantly for women in their 50s and 60s, but early detection and regular screenings can improve the chances of survival by 80 percent. Unfortunately, many cases are diagnosed at later stages due to the lack of awareness and early screening programs. The 'Pink Mela' initiative is a step towards educating women on the importance of early detection,” said Dr. Raj Nagarkar, MD & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, HCGMCC.
“Several factors, including late pregnancies, family history, hormonal changes, and lifestyle habits like smoking and high stress, can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. With its growing prevalence, it’s essential to promote awareness and regular screenings to combat this health crisis. Early detection increases the chances of survival by 80 percent.
Rangoli and mehendi competitions, dancing music, and a number of other entertaining events were all part of PinkMela's offerings. Nearly a thousand people signed up for checkups at their free breast cancer awareness camp. Sonalee Kulkarni, a famous Marathi actor, was invited as a special guest for PinkMela by Epic Marketing, a top marketing firm in Nashik, which was another major draw this year. The Pink Mela aims to empower women through preventive care and routine check-ups, particularly for those at higher risk,” concluded Dr. Nagarkar.
