At 94, Pani Devi Godara, fondly known as Bikaner’s “Golden Dadi” returned home to a hero’s welcome after winning four gold medals at the 23rd Asian Masters Athletics Championship held in Chennai. As she stepped into the city, crowds gathered to greet her with flowers, cheers, and heartfelt pride. The atmosphere in Bikaner turned electric, celebrating not just an athlete but a living symbol of resilience, courage, and the power of never giving up.
Competing in the 90+ age category, Pani Devi dominated the championship by winning gold in four major events: the 100-meter sprint, shot put, discus throw, and javelin throw. Her sweep across all four events placed her in the global spotlight, setting a new standard for what athletes of her age can achieve. Her victories sent a powerful message: age is not a limitation but a crown of wisdom, strength, and spirit. While many slow down at this stage of life, Pani Devi chose to speed up, running, throwing, and outperforming competitors with grace and grit.
Behind her golden triumph lies a journey shaped by hardship, responsibility, and unwavering determination. Pani Devi never had the chance to attend school, and after becoming a widow early in life, she raised eight children on her own while working in farmlands. Her entry into athletics happened much later, encouraged by her grandson, who trained para-athletes. Even injuries never stopped her; whether it was an ankle twist or knee strain, she always returned to the field with a stronger spirit.
True to her roots, she often competes wearing her traditional ghagra-choli, proving that identity and pride need no compromise. Today, despite being an international champion, she continues to live a simple life tending to her buffaloes, staying disciplined, and inspiring millions with her humility. Pani Devi’s story is not just about medals; it is about rewriting the meaning of strength.
