Food wastage is a humongous problem in India. Most of the times people tend to dump the excess food into a garbage bin rather feeding it to the needy. However, there are people who are looking into this alarming issue and trying their utmost to solve it.
Padmanaban Gopalan is one such person who recently got recognized for feeding the underprivileged people. The 26-year-old social entrepreneur got conferred with the Commonwealth Youth Award for the Asian region at a ceremony which was held in Commonwealth Secretariat in London. The award is worth 3000 Pounds and was given to Padmanaban for his excellent work towards acquiring the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by the UN through his organization, No Food Waste.
No Food Waste has a geo-mapping system through which users can add hunger spots (places where needy people reside the most) by clicking a picture of the areas. On average, Padmanaban’s organization feeds 900 people each day and they are available in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. They pick up surplus food from events, parties, and weddings in order to feed the needy.
Padmanaban wants to make the most out of the award money thus, he wishes to extend the geo-mapping system to other cities as well. We hope he and his team reach out to more people and make this world a better place for them.
