Novak Djokovic has always been a “pop-culture” figure, with his tennis exploits regularly appearing in headlines and on TV screens around the world. However, the 35-year-old’s latest accolade – winning his 10th Australian Open title – has taken centre stage.
Djokovic’s return to Australia – after being deported from the country after attempting to enter with an exemption from the mandatory covid vaccination – was met with skepticism and scrutiny, with some questioning whether he could actually win the title. Outcomes aside, the underlying theme of this tournament was the pressure that Djokovic was under.
Djokovic dropped just one set in his seven matches, but it was his record-extending 10th Australian Open title that was the most challenging. After the final, Djokovic broke down in tears while embracing his team in his player box. When he went into his box, he just emotionally collapsed there and teared up, especially when he hugged his mother and brother.
Djokovic’s tally of 22 grand slam titles moves him in level with Rafa Nadal as the joint men’s all-time grand slam record holder. He also returns to world no 1 for the first time since June. With this title, Djokovic becomes the first player in history to win 10 Australian Open titles.
Djokovic’s hamstring injury – which he revealed before the tournament – had an impact on his performance, but Ivanisevic, Djokovic’s coach, believes that most players would not have competed with the injury he had. Djokovic’s tenacity and resilience in overcoming the challenges he faced – both on and off the court – is an inspiration to all.
