The Indian Navy is considered one of the best in the world with its numerous achievements and state of the art ships and submarines. Every year, December 4th is observed as Navy Day to celebrate the magnificence, achievements, and role of the naval force in the country.

The Indian Navy plays an important role in securing the marine borders of the country as well as enhancing the international relations of India through seaport visits, joint exercises, humanitarian missions and calamity relief.

The President of India is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy. India started celebrating Navy Day after the Indo-Pak war of 1971 to commemorate the courageous attack on the Karachi port by Indian Naval Missile ships as well as to reverence all the martyrs of that war.

In the war, India successfully subdued the enemy with the help of three missile boats of the Indian Navy, INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer that played a pivotal role in sinking four Pakistani vessels and ravaging the Karachi harbour fuel fields.

INS Veer fired its first missile onto Pakistani vessel Muhafiz, a minesweeper, sinking it with the entire crew. Indian warships also destroyed a cargo ship carrying ammunition before victoriously returning to Mumbai without a single Indian casualty.

Currently, the Indian Navy can boast of the most modern ships and submarines besides maritime patrol aircraft. The second indigenously built anti-submarine warfare corvette, INS Kadmatt, was commissioned in Vizag in January this year. It also possesses highly manoeuvrable fast attack crafts INS Tarmugli and INS Tihayu, besides the Seven Hawk aircraft which were inducted into the Navy as well as INS Karma, the base for Indian Navy's Marcos in Vizag.

Many naval warships also took part in overseas deployment in the past one year and undertook international fleet reviews and multilateral naval exercises including counter-terrorism exercises. INS Satpura was the first Indian Navy ship to visit the Marshall Islands and Micronesia.The modern Indian navy has as undergone speedy renovation in order to improve its position in the Indian Ocean region.

This year, on Navy Day, award-winning innovations by the force will be on display at the "Innovation Pavilion" at the Navy House in Delhi like the innovations by Indian Naval Ships 'Kuthar' and 'Vikramaditya'.The innovations by the Weapons Electronic Systems Engineering Establishment (WESEE) and Naval Aircraft Yard, Kochi were also on display.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, greeted all personnel of Indian Navy and their families on the occasion of Navy Day. He sent his greetings in a tweet along with a video of the Indian Navy showing its prowess in the sea.

President Ram Nath Kovind also sent his wishes and stated that the nation is proud of their commitment to protecting our maritime frontiers, securing our trade routes, and providing assistance in times of civil emergencies.
