Greenery enhances the beauty of a particular city. Earth Day Network came up with a contest called Sheher Green Karo in April and the city of oranges, Nagpur stood out in it.
The city Municipal Corporation (NMC), as well as the Green Vigil Foundation, has become one of the winners. It was a pan India contest where almost 49 cities participated. The participants were judged on the basis of the actions taken to beautify their city, reduce carbon footprint, sustain resources, manage waste and so on as reported by TOI.
The measures which were taken through the awareness campaigns and other commendable actions to keep the nature intact helped the city make its way to the winners’ list.
While talking to TOI, Kaustav Chatterjee, the founder of Green Vigil spoke about the great things that they did to keep the greenery unaffected as he said: “Efforts to maintain green cover of Nagpur by keeping a check on rampant illegal tree felling, mega project of de-choking trees introducing a Simple Operating Procedure, making illegal tree felling (even a branch) extremely difficult and permission contingent on compensatory plantation, reviving a 150-year-old banyan and other awareness programmes were highlighted in the contest.”
The sight of the green cover makes the soul happy but, we will only be left with barren lands if we keep giving importance to urbanization and axing trees. If Nagpur and other winners of the contest like Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Varanasi, Chandigarh, and Raipur can do it then the rest of the world can too. We just need to be cautious of our actions and the urge to safeguard the greenery should be there.
