In 1937, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to fly to space, then came Svetlana Savitskaya who made two spaceflights for the very first time. The list of female spacefarers kept extending and all of them received recognition. On April 24, 2017, Peggy Whitson became the first female NASA astronaut to take the longest spaceflight as she set a record of spending 288 days in space which, Christina Koch is all set to break.
It has been said that Christina reached the ISS on March 14 and will stay there until February 2020. NASA Astronauts, Andrew Morgan and Jessica Meir will also arrive at the space station after a few months and the former’s stay will be extended while the latter will leave early.
Christina has contributed to scientific instruments while working as an electrical engineer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Laboratory. In 2013, NASA selected her as a part of Astronaut Group 21 and she got done with her training in 2015.
In March, Christina was also supposed to be a part of first all-female spacewalk with army engineer and NASA astronaut, Anne McClain which got reassigned owing to spacesuit issues.
Apart from working as an astronaut, Christina loves to backpack, travel and do photography.
