Plastic, though a remarkable invention of mankind has eventually become hazardous to the environment due to its inability to decompose. Plastic strewn on roads or other public places besides being an eyesore chokes drains and pollutes the atmosphere when burnt.
Numerous initiatives have been introduced by concerned and responsible citizens to make their towns plastic-free. I recently came across a novel and exciting idea – ‘Wall of Hope’ which is in Mussoorie, a popular tourist attraction. It is a gentle reminder to the tourists not to litter the place.
The ‘Wall of Hope’ is 1,500 feet long and 12 feet high and is located in Bunglow ki Kandi village near Mussoorie. It is the joint efforts of more than 50 school and college students as well as villagers who came together and volunteered to create this unique wall with a message.
This project is the brainchild of Subodh Kerkar, founder of the Museum of Goa. He said that steel pillars fixed two feet below the ground gave strength to the structure which is completely rain and wind proof. What more, the structure also complements the serene background of the hills.
The installation is a part of the Hilldaari project that aims at creating awareness about a plastic-free environment. The people of the town are also overjoyed by the ‘Wall of Hope’ as it adds to the beauty of the place and at the same time delivers an impactful message.
Now, this is one wall that we all hope to be inspired by.
