Being kind and giving can only result in phenomenal outcomes because an urge to create a positive impact on society will give rise to several developments. And Mike Than Tun Win teaches us exactly the same.
The 33-year-old entrepreneur came up with LessWalk, a non-profit organization that purchases bike sharing cycles to donate them to the needy students of Myanmar who take a long distance walk to schools. The bikes which were brought in April will be given away to the kids from the end of this month. They plan to donate the cycles to students falling under the age category of 13 to 18.
The cycles that are purchased are both used and brand new. LessWalk revamps them and also work with the Ministry of Education to make this initiative a success. 10,000 bikes from ofo and oBike will not get discarded as Mike has brought them to distribute among the children.
The bikes will promote the LessWalk initiative, hence they will repaint them while the locks will turn into manual locks and a smaller seat will be added for the students to make space for their siblings.
In a conversation with The Straits Times, Mike spoke about the movement as he said: "For the scrapyards, they can get maybe about $10 a bike, it is not a lot to them. But these bikes can mean a lot to the students, who can be more productive, save 80 per cent of their time travelling and feel a sense of warmth that people care."
This commendable step will make commuting to school easy for several underprivileged kids in Myanmar. Education is going to make today’s generation tomorrow’s leaders and we are glad that people like Mike are taking such initiatives.
