Facebook has designed an app for children aged six to 12 that will allow parents to approve the people their kids can talk to. The Messenger Kids app that has now been rolled out in the US can be controlled from a parent’s Facebook account.

Loren Cheng, product management director stated in a company blog post that the new app .makes it easier for kids to safely video chat and message with family and friends when they can’t be together in person.

According to Facebook, Messenger Kids has been designed to be compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA). One can download the app for free and there are no ads in Messenger Kids.

Parents will have to set up the Facebook Messenger Kids account and approve of the contacts that their kids can talk to. It means the app will not allow children to connect with people who have not been approved by parents. Kids can start a group or one-on-one video chat; or send videos, photos, text messages to contacts approved by parents. Adults will receive messages from Messenger Kids via their regular Messenger app.

An interesting feature of the Messenger Kids app is a “library of kid-appropriate and specially chosen GIFs, frames, stickers, masks and drawing tools.” Facebook will also add masks along with emojis to this app.
