As a child, I was fascinated by table tennis and curious about how people played it. I joined several classes, but struggled with the sport. Even now, I'm still learning how to hold a racket properly. Through this journey, I came across the inspiring story of Meenakshi Chandran, which instantly captivated me and made me eager to learn more about her.
In the bustling city of Coimbatore, where technology often takes center stage, Meenakshi Chandran is proving that human connection can be just as powerful. At 34, this IT professional has found a way to merge her love for table tennis with a deeper purpose—empowering para-athletes and breaking barriers in the sports community. But her journey isn’t just about the game; it’s about passion, perseverance, and a commitment to uplifting those who need it most.
A Passion Ignited: Meenakshi's Journey in Table Tennis
Meenakshi's love for table tennis began in her school days, where, despite the lack of a formal sports coach, she was introduced to the game in a government-aided school. It was during a physical education class in Class 6 that she first picked up a racket. The teacher's encouragement sparked a desire to improve, and by Class 7, she was already competing in inter-school tournaments. Though she lost that first competition, she was determined to not let that defeat define her.
Her journey wasn't without its challenges. Lacking formal training, Meenakshi joined a table tennis academy to sharpen her skills. Eventually, her hard work paid off as she competed at both state and national levels. While Meenakshi's career in IT continued to thrive, her passion for social service was always a driving force. She had inherited this love for helping others from her father, and even in her college years, she was actively involved in outreach programs, helping those in need.
Meenakshi's introduction to the Ganga Spine Rehab Centre was a game-changer. There, she met Suresh, a wheelchair-bound player, who shared the challenges he faced at conventional academies where the training was not suited to the needs of para-athletes. Inspired by his story, Meenakshi knew she had to do something. Determined to make a difference, Meenakshi began to tailor her coaching to the specific needs of para-athletes.
Today, Meenakshi has established the Coimbatore Para Table Tennis Committee, a formal platform affiliated with the Coimbatore Table Tennis Association, where she organizes competitions for para athletes. Over 20 students currently train under her, using two tables at the rehab center. Meenakshi's commitment is unwavering; she conducts sessions on weekends and after work hours during tournament seasons. However, despite her efforts and the success of her athletes, Meenakshi faces ongoing challenges. The lack of proper facilities and sponsorship continues to be a significant hurdle.
Encouraging Women in Sports: Meenakshi’s Call to Action
Meenakshi is not just dedicated to her athletes; she is also deeply committed to encouraging other women to stay involved in sports. “If you can’t continue your sports career, at least come forward to impart your knowledge,” she says. Her message resonates particularly with married women who may feel that their responsibilities at home prevent them from engaging in sports. Meenakshi believes that their experience and knowledge can make a profound impact on the next generation of athletes.
Meenakshi's work remains largely unfunded, and she often faces financial difficulties. Still, she continues to be determined. She has written to the local collector, seeking a separate training facility for her athletes, and continues to raise funds through crowdfunding. Meenakshi's story is a powerful reminder that true success isn't measured by individual victories, but by how much we give back to others. Through her dedication to para table tennis, she has not only changed the lives of her students but has sparked a wider movement that is breaking down barriers and empowering people to believe in their potential.
