Kerala is no stranger to beauty; lush backwaters, misty hill stations, and sun-kissed beaches have long wooed travelers from around the globe. But tucked away from the tourist throngs lies Malarikkal. The word "Malarikkal" can be roughly translated to "where flowers bloom" in English. This quiet place near Kottayam comes alive with an explosion of pink and white water lilies and lotus blooms every September and October.
Each year, around the end of the monsoon, something magical happens. Over 650 acres of paddy fields turn into an ethereal lake filled with lakhs of water lilies (locally known as aambal). The best time to visit is around sunrise, between 6:00 and 9:00 am, when the flowers bloom fully and dance gently with the morning light. The flooded fields reflect the soft golden skies, and the pink-white blossoms across the water are like a painting coming to life.
Tourists can ride in small country boats through the lily-filled waterways. The boats glide slowly, with only the gentle splash of water breaking the silence. There are no motors, no blaring music, only nature and the soft strokes of a boat moving forward, and the locals have embraced visitors with warmth and pride.
Malarikkal came into public consciousness thanks to social media. A few videos posted online ignited curiosity across Kerala, and soon, people from across the state came to see this floral marvel. Now, pre-wedding photoshoots and nature photography tours are common, but what social media often fails to capture is the emotion of the place and the stories written into the fields. Malarikkal isn’t just about flowers. It’s about community and a deep-rooted connection to the land.
The water lily bloom wasn’t planted for tourism; it happened naturally, over years, after rice harvests left the fields flooded. Nature took over.
They formed a local committee to manage visitors. They host an annual Malarikkal Water Lily Fest that celebrates local culture and the beauty of their land.
Getting There: A Journey Worth Taking
Malarikkal is located just 7–10 km from Kottayam town. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (85 km away). From Kottayam, a short drive along scenic village roads lined with coconut palms, canals, and little tea shops leads to this blooming paradise. More than the flowers, it’s the feeling that stays with you. The stillness. The wonder. The human connection. In a world that moves fast and forgets faster, Malarikkal slows you down, reminds you to notice beauty in silence, to cherish the little things, and to connect deeply and sincerely with nature and with people.
