Pulse Polio Immunisation (PPI) programme was launched by President Ram Nath Kovind for 2018 by administering polio drops to children less than five years old on Saturday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The event took place on The National Immunisation Day which is observed on 28th January.
More than 17 crore children of less than five years across the country will be given polio drops as part of the government’s drive to eradicate polio from the country and make India polio-free. Present at the function, the Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda said, “We need to remain vigilant and maintain the population’s immunity and [continue] sensitive surveillance till global polio eradication happens as poliovirus is still circulating in other parts of the world and may reinfect us.”
The government is making all the possible efforts to protect children from more and more diseases. “It is important that all vaccines under the programme reach every last child of our country,” stated the minister. “To provide additional protection to our children, we have also introduced the injectable Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) into the routine immunization programme.”concluded the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister.
