A recent study proved wrong years’ long prediction of scientists. There can be huge reservoirs of water under moon’s surface!
Scientists thought that the interior of moon has very less water and other volatile compounds. But this assumption was proved wrong after new study of satellite data. The data showed enormous volcanic depositions on the surface of moon that had large amounts of water trapped in them. This shows that water can be stored in the form volcanic glass beads that would come out from deep interior of the moon during volcanic explosions. This proves lunar’s surprisingly water rich mantle.
The volcanic glass beads can be extracted. In 2008, researchers found the presence of slight water in the volcanic glass beads that was brought back to Earth during the Apollo 15 and 17 lunar missions. The study of these extracted glass beads made certain revelations in 2011. The tiny crystalline formations in the beads held amounts of water similar to the ones in the Earth’s basalt. This was one basis that proved that moon’s mantle can contain as much water as in Earth’s.
Though a proper conclusion has not yet been drawn, some scientists claim that those samples might just represent some anomalous water rich regions in moon’s probable dry mantle!
