Indian origin barrister Jasvir Singh from London has become the youngest Sikh in the world to be honoured with the Order of the British Empire (OBE). It is awarded in the recognition of the contribution of Sikh diaspora in the UK.
Jasvir Singh is born in a Sikh family in London which is originally from the Doaba region of Punjab, India. He is brought up and educated in the UK, as reported by The Times of India.
Jasvir Singh is the Founding Chair of the organization ‘City Sikhs’ and the Chair of the ‘Faiths Forum for London’. This organization works for the interests of nine main faith communities in London. These are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Zoroastrian, and Baha'i communities.
He says, "I feel immensely proud to have been honoured with an OBE. It was a complete surprise, and it is heartening to know that my work on social cohesion and faith communities over last 7 years has been recognized in such a significant way."
In 2010, City Sikhs was founded by young Sikh professionals active in and around Central London.
Jasvir Singh adds, "We have several nation-wide projects, including one which is looking at the relationships between the Hindu, Sikh and Muslim communities in pre-Partition India, during the Partition, and in present-day Britain."
His efforts seems to be going in right direction, as the The British Crown has taken note and awarded him with the OBE.
This certainly is a proud moment not only for the Sikh community but every Indian Citizen.
