Southern Railway has demonstrated its dedication to sustainability and energy efficiency by showcasing the cutting-edge solar panels that have been placed atop the platform shelters at Kozhikode railway station.
The Railway Energy Management Company Limited (REMCL) came up with the idea for the project and is investigating the possibilities of different renewable energy sources for energy production. According to a press release from MK Gopinath, Public Relations Officer, Southern Railway, Palakkad Division, the company is a joint venture of the Ministry of Railways with equity participation from Indian Railways and RITES Limited, formerly known as Rail India Technical and Economic Service.
The solar panels are a big step in the right direction for Indian Railways' green energy initiatives. Southern Railway plans to reduce energy expenses and improve operational efficiency by making use of the region's plentiful sunshine. The Kozhikode station's display of solar-powered platform shelters is a component of Indian Railways' larger initiative to switch to renewable energy. This demonstrates the railway's commitment to environmental sustainability and is in line with its objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Kozhikode station is an encouraging model for future stations nationwide as Southern Railway expands its solar projects. In addition to highlighting the value of renewable energy, this project pushes the railway network to adopt cutting-edge operational strategies.
Indian Railways is one of the biggest investors in renewable energy, with a steadily increasing commitment over the past decade. Starting in 2009, it pledged to source 10% of its energy from renewables and aimed to install 150 MW of wind power and 100 MW of solar power by 2020. Last year, it took this commitment further, announcing plans to install 20 GW of solar power on unused railway land by 2030.
“By moving to solar-to-rail, Indian Railways can experience significant cost savings and CO2 emission reductions due to the abundance of solar resources and the low cost of renewable power.” Additionally, in order to meet its net-zero goal, India must expedite grid cleaning in order to support standalone solar systems, according to Akshima T. Ghate, principal of RMI India.
Indian Railways' dedication to renewable energy highlights its role as a leader in sustainable infrastructure. By continuously expanding its green energy initiatives, it not only reduces its carbon footprint but also sets a strong example for sustainable growth in India.
