Stratolaunch, the world’s largest airplane is rolled out for testing in Mojave desert. This aircraft has the capability of launching satellite-carrying rockets.
The aircraft is now rolled out for testing its fuel systems and engines on its huge 28 wheels. The Stratolaunch aircraft weighs about 5 lakh pounds with six Pratt & Whitney engines fitted to it. It has the maximum takeoff weight of 1.3 million pounds and an operational range of about 2 thousand nautical miles. It is 238 feet long from nose to end and has the wingspan of about 385 feet. The aircraft will carry rockets beneath the central part of the wings and release it at a height of about 35 thousand feet. The aircraft will have a three-person flight crew- a pilot, a co-pilot and a flight engineer.
This project has been undertaken by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The work on this has been in progress for six years. The aircraft is nicknamed as Roc. Roc is a mythical Middle Eastern Bird which is so big that it can carry an elephant in its claw.
This project will revolutionize the orbital travel and will encourage reusability.
