Captain Shiva Chouhan of the Indian Army's Fire and Fury Corps became the first female officer to be operationally deployed to Siachen Glacier, the highest battleground in the world. After completing arduous training, officer Chauhan has been assigned to the Kumar Post, the Fire and Fury Corps announced on Tuesday.
Bengal Sapper Capt. Shiva Chouhan hails from Rajasthan. She attended school in Udaipur and graduated from the NJR Institute of Technology in Udaipur with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
She had been inspired to join the Indian Armed Forces since her childhood, and while undergoing training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, she displayed unmatched fervor. In May 2021, she was commissioned into the Engineer Regiment.
In July 2022, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Captain Shiva successfully led the Sura Soi Cycling Expedition from Siachen War Memorial to Kargil War Memorial, completing a distance of 508 kilometers. The officer subsequently accepted the responsibility of commanding the men of the Sura Soi Engineer Regiment on the highest battlefield in the world, and as a result of her splendid performance, she was chosen to get training at the Siachen Battle School.
Captain Shiva Chouhan persevered through numerous difficulties and successfully completed the course which included avalanche and crevasse rescue exercises, ice wall climbing, endurance training, and survival drills among other challenges.
The Sappers squad, led by Capt. Shiva Chouhan will be stationed at the position for three months and will be in charge of many combat engineering duties.
