GM Upper Primary School in Kattampally, Kerala has come up with a novel initiative of arranging a special van to pick up bags from designated points in the neighbourhood so that students can walk freely without the burden of heavy school bags.
Earlier many students who couldn’t afford the bus facility of school due to financial constraints had to walk to school with their bags. Due to this facility, the students no longer have to trudge to school. Without the bags, the walking routine has become very enjoyable for the happy children.
This measure has been initiated by the school to encourage walking among students and reducing dependence on vehicles. Headmistress Gangabai N. said that over 300 students have availed this facility.
This initiative is the brainchild of teacher N M Ravi, who is also the transport in charge. He said that the facility was introduced last year as many students have found it difficult to carry heavy bags to school.
As of now, the service is free, but the school plans to charge a minimal amount to meet the expenses. However, while returning home, students will have to carry their own bags as there is no option of dropping bags after school because of confusion regarding delivery to the collection points without error.
