In present times when a small spark leads to big clashes between people on the basis of religions, the dedication of three Muslim men towards the upkeep of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya is heartening.
Abdul Wahid has been guarding the temple for the past two decades. The public works department (PWD) always seeks his help whenever the barbed wires surrounding the temple are damaged by rain or storm. He helps maintain the temple’s security and revels in his work.
His friend, Sadiq Ali stitches kurtas, sadris ( jackets), pagdis and trousers, but he takes immense pride and joy in stitching 'vastra' (clothes) for the "Ram lalla" (infant Ram) idol every few months on request from the head priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple. He believes that God is one for all of us.
Mehboob, another helper at the temple is an electrician who ensures that the site where the Ram Lalla idol is kept is lit up round-the-clock. In 1995, he excavated underground water near Sita Kund for the community kitchen at Ram Janmabhoomi with the help of a three-phase motor. He considers himself an Indian and all Hindus as his brothers. He is proud of his work.
The three often meet over tea or take long walks with priests along the banks of the Saryu river. Their dedication towards their work and love for their country gives hope of continuation of communal harmony, peace and brotherhood.
