Qudsia Altaf, 23, is a woman with a dream. Adjusting her bright red cap she trains young boys and girls to play football in the grounds of Kashmir University.
She quit her civil engineering dream to help the youth when she saw clashes between security forces and mobs in the valley last year. She encourages the local youth to play football and coaches them daily.
Qudsia loved and played the sport since 2007. Despite playing at district and state levels, she regrets that she couldn’t represent India. She then trained herself as a football coach at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.
Now, she coaches a group of boys and girls in football. She dreams of seeing these players represent India in international events. She believes that there is a bright chance for them to make their country proud.
Seeing her dedication, chief minister Mehbooba Mufti appointed Qudsia as the football coach for the under-14 and under-17 girls and boys teams. Qudsia was thrilled with her new job as a coach at J&K State Sports Council.
Hailing from a conservative society, Qudsia had to face many challenges as a woman football coach. She just shrugged off all the comments over hijab or her t-shirt and arm bands and continued with determination to train the youth filling their hearts and minds with hopes and dreams.
