In a remarkable series of archaeological findings, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh has revealed captivating remnants of a 2,000-year-old modern society. Following the discovery of ancient Buddhist caves, temples, and inscriptions dating back to the 2nd and 5th century BCE in 2022, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has now stumbled upon a treasure trove that provides insights into the existence of an advanced civilization within the tiger reserve's premises.
Reports confirm that Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve has become a hub of historical treasures, including a 1,500-year-old rock painting and a man-made waterbody from two millennia ago. Experts from ASI have verified that this region was once part of a significant trade route. Superintendent archaeologist Shivakant Bajpai from ASI Jabalpur Circle stated that these artifacts offer undeniable evidence of a sophisticated society that thrived thousands of years ago.
The construction of water reservoirs, utilized for rainwater collection, are estimated to be around 1,800 to 2,000 years old. Further analysis suggests that renovations were carried out approximately 1,000 years ago, indicating the enduring importance of water management in the region.
Exciting discoveries have also emerged from the Tala range of Bandhavgarh, where 11 rock-cut caves were unearthed. These caves were used by traders as shelters during their journeys. Notably, one particular cave boasts a 15-century-old painting believed to depict an animal from the Golden Age.
The ongoing survey, which commenced on April 1 and will continue until June 30, holds the promise of unveiling even more secrets about the advanced society that once thrived in the heart of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. As these ancient marvels come to light, they offer a captivating glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.
