Iran plans to decriminalize drug use that will help to heal drug addicts, rather than punishing them. Iranian lawmakers have passed a motion in this regard.
The judicial and Legal commission has yet to finalize the exact legislation. Meanwhile, the proposal permits the government to offer diluted substances to drug users which will help them to gradually shake off the habit and severe ties between addicts and traffickers.
Methadone - a prescription opiate used to treat heroin addiction – has been legalized so that its use will help drug users to get rid of their addiction.
Some countries are wary of following Iran’s stand on drug use, but countries like Portugal that had decriminalized drug use offers some hope. It has been 14 years since Portugal decriminalized heroin and the nation’s drug use fell by about a third.
There was 50 per cent decrease in heroin addiction and drug related deaths decreased by 75%.
Hassan Norouzi, the spokesperson for the Parliament’s Judicial and Legal Commission said that it was essential to cut off the relationship between drug addicts and narco-traffickers. Hence it was decided that the government would hand out diluted drugs to addicts so that they will be able to give up their addiction gradually instead of being drawn to drug-traffickers. The drug users can turn to the Establishment and meet their needs through official channels.
