The International Mountain Day (IMD) was celebrated in many parts of Uttarakhand on Monday by conducting nature walks, mountain biking, exhibitions and talks on the Himalayas.
The Uttarakhand State Council for Science & Technology (UCOST) organized R S Tolia Memorial lecture on the theme — ‘Mountains under pressure, climate, hunger and migration’.
The Central Himalayan Institute for Nature and Applied Research (CHINAR), an NGO (working in the mountain regions of India for environmental sustainability and livelihood of the mountain community) and Uttarakhand state’s tourism department jointly held grand celebrations in Bageshwar district.
Environmentalist Anil Joshi stressed that everybody should join hands for the conservation of the mountain ecology.” Another activist J P Maithani and founder of Aaagas federation, a grass root voluntary organization working in the central Himalayan region asserted that local communities should be involved for sustainable development in the mountains.
Environmentalist, Chandi Prasad Bhatt delivered the second R S Tolia Memorial lecture at the regional science centre. He spoke on the topic, Himalaya- sensitivity, threats and challenges’. He stated that many environmental Acts have been passed, but they need to be implemented at the ground level.
