India got its fastest supercomputer when it was inaugurated by the union minister for science and technology Harsh Vardhan on Monday. The supercomputer has been christened “Pratyush”, which means the sun. It has been dedicated to the nation and will render enhanced weather and climate forecasts. It will also help improve India's peak computing capacity from 1 petaflop to 6.8 petaflops. Petaflop is a measure of processing speed and equals a quadrillion floating point operations per second.
The supercomputer has been installed at the High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune.
