It was a perfect birthday for short putter Manpreet Kaur as she opened India's gold medal account with a career second best throw of 18.28m.
Kaur along with long distance runner G Lakshmanan won gold medals on the first day of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships which was a remarkable day for India as it topped the medal tally with seven medals.
China occupies the second position with one gold and two silver medals.
The packed Kalinga stadium rose to applaud Manpreet Kaur as she defeated the defending champion Chinese Guo Tianqian who came second with a best throw of 17.91m.
India got its second gold with 27-year-old Lakhsmanan’s unexpected win in men's 5000m race clocking 14 minutes 54.48 seconds. In the previous edition of the game in 2013, he had won the bronze and this win is a testimony to the hard work he put in to improve his record.
Other Indian winners include V Neena and Nayan James who won a silver and bronze in women's long jump while Vikas Gowda, Sanjivini Yadav, Annu Rani earned a bronze each in the men's discus throw, women's 5000m race and javelin throw respectively.
Winners of the Asian Championships get an automatic berth for the World Championships to be held in London next month.
