In an electric atmosphere at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Indian women’s cricket team scripted a fairy-tale ending to the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Facing formidable opponents in the South African women’s national cricket team in the final, India secured a convincing 52-run win to lift the trophy for the first time. The home crowd erupted; the long-awaited moment had arrived.
Chasing 299, South Africa entered with strong hope, but it was India’s innings earlier that truly set the tone. The Indian side posted 298 for 7, finishing just short of the 300-mark yet comfortably ahead. The opening stand, led by Shafali Verma (87) and Smriti Mandhana (45), laid the platform. Verma’s power-packed knock and Mandhana’s fluent touch signalled India’s intent.
Later, Deepti Sharma (58) anchored the middle overs, steadying the innings when South Africa began to claw back. The result: India posted their second-highest score ever in a Women’s ODI final.
As the Proteas started their chase, they looked promising at 209 for 5, but India’s bowlers had an answer. Deepti Sharma produced a match-defining spell of 5 for 39, including a double-wicket over that removed captain Laura Wolvaardt and Chloe Tryon.
Earlier, Verma herself had turned the tide by removing key batters in successive overs, while Sree Charani and sharp fielding by Amanjot Kaur sealed South Africa’s fate. The slide from 209 to 246 all out epitomized India’s brilliant teamwork.
When the final wicket fell, the roar of “India! India!” echoed around the stadium. For the women’s team, it was momentous. the first time India lifted a Women’s World Cup trophy. As players embraced, the fans stood and cheered an entire generation of hopes fulfilled.
This victory carries deeper significance. It is a milestone for women’s sport in India, a message that perseverance, preparation, and passion pay off on the biggest stage. For young girls across the country who dream of picking up a bat or ball, this moment offers real inspiration. It also reflects an evolving culture within Indian cricket: investment in talent, belief in leadership, and the importance of teamwork.
With the trophy secured, the challenge now shifts from achieving the dream to sustaining success. India now has a target on their backs: all other teams will measure themselves against this benchmark. India didn’t just win a World Cup; India changed what the world expects from women’s cricket. And from here, the only direction is forward—louder, prouder, and unstoppable!
