The Indian women’s football team is just one step away from reclaiming regional supremacy. In a tense and hard-fought semifinal at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa, India edged past Bhutan 1-0 to secure a place in the final of the SAFF Women’s Championship for the first time in six years.
The breakthrough came in the 58th minute when midfielder Sanfida Nongrum produced a composed finish to send the home crowd into celebration and book India’s place in Saturday’s title clash against defending champions Bangladesh.
Despite being ranked 69th in the world and sitting 92 places above Bhutan, India found itself in a fiercely contested encounter. Bhutan showed remarkable resilience and confidence, refusing to be intimidated by the tournament’s most successful side. The visitors even threatened early, winning consecutive corners and testing India’s defence. However, the hosts gradually settled into the game and began creating opportunities through the lively Karishma Shirvoikar and Soumya Guguloth.
India dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances. Tournament top scorer Aveka Singh, who netted four goals in the team’s opening 11-0 win against Maldives, was kept unusually quiet by Bhutan’s disciplined backline.
Recognising the need for fresh energy, head coach Crispin Chettri made a triple substitution at the start of the second half. The introduction of Sangita Basfore, Malavika, and star winger Manisha Kalyan immediately injected pace and creativity into India’s attack.
The move paid off within minutes. A defensive clearance from Bhutan goalkeeper Sangita Monger failed to travel far enough, allowing Basfore to win an aerial duel and direct the ball toward Sanfida. The midfielder kept her composure and slotted home the decisive goal, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and fans alike.
After taking the lead, India remained disciplined and prevented Bhutan from finding an equaliser. The hosts continued to create chances, with Manisha Kalyan and Astam Oraon both coming close to extending the advantage. SaffFinalNow, a bigger challenge awaits.
India will face defending champions Bangladesh, who defeated Nepal 2-1 in the other semifinal to reach their third consecutive final. The matchup promises to be an exciting contest, especially since India registered a convincing 3-0 win over Bangladesh during the group stage.
Having won the first five editions of the SAFF Women’s Championship and last lifted the trophy in 2019, India now have the opportunity to reclaim their crown. With momentum on their side and a passionate home crowd behind them, the Blue Tigresses will be eager to complete their journey with a championship triumph.
