The anticipation for the 19th Asian Games reached new heights as the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games flame was ceremoniously lit at the historic Liangzhu ancient city. This momentous occasion, which also signaled the 100-day countdown to the Games' opening, captivated spectators worldwide.
Utilizing the power of the sun's rays, the flame was kindled from a concave mirror in an amazing display. Passing the torch from the flame collector to Yi Lianhong, the esteemed secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, the cauldron erupted in a radiant blaze. Simultaneously, a digital torch relay commenced online, connecting global audiences to the grandeur of the event, as reported by Xinhua.
Initially slated for 2022, the Hangzhou Asian Games had to be postponed for a year due to the unprecedented challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. China, like many other nations, faced the need to reschedule or cancel numerous events as stringent lockdown measures were implemented during the pandemic.
However, with the gradual return to normalcy in recent months, construction work resumed, and now, with just half a year remaining until the Games, all facilities are prepared to host the prestigious event.
Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games will showcase a total of 56 competition facilities, including 12 newly constructed venues and 44 renovated and temporary structures. A staggering 482 events spanning 40 sports will take place during the two-week-long extravaganza, with an impressive participation expected from a majority of the 45 nations and territories across the continent.
As the clock ticks closer to September 2023, the world eagerly awaits the remarkable moments of sportsmanship and unity that will unfold in Hangzhou, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of the Asian Games.
