You and I can lead a much healthy life if each one of us starts managing our waste. The environment can benefit from it too, isn’t it? But, did you know of any machine that can segregate waste on its own?
Nine students from IIT Madras developed a smart bin, Automatic Waste Segregator which has four sections for the different types of waste. It also has motor and sensors which help identify the waste and push it in one of the sections.
While talking to TOI about its development, Pranjal Mehta who looked after the business part along with Hari Ramachandran said: “We have used hydrophobic coating on the robotic arms that pushes the waste into the bin, without which there are chances of liquid waste sticking onto it. We have placed sensors like capacitive sensors, resistive sensors, inductive proximity sensor and ultrasonic sensors, and there is a camera, too, on top of it.”
The technology aspect of the machine was taken care of by the other seven students, Varun Sundar, Arvind Pujari, Rohith Srinivaas, Vishnu Harshit, Iniyan Ram, Tanay Garg, and Sai Venkat.
TOI also reported that the students behind this project will share their ideas regarding it at both national and international levels at Hult Prize by The Bill Clinton Foundation.
It just takes 10 seconds for the smart bin to identify the waste and drop it in its section. A total of RS 40,000 has been spent to manufacture it and project has already been run as a pilot in Kalakshetra Colony.
Did you ever think that something like this would be created? Thanks to the minds behind this development for making waste management easy.
